Understanding the Work of Appellate Attorneys
Appeals are very different than trials. An appellate attorney can lay fresh eyes on your case. We have the experience to look at a case through an appellate lens to best position your case on appeal. We assess whether a trial court made any legal errors or misinterpreted the spirit or letter of the law. When a legal error has occurred, we pursue a remedy.
While high quality appellate litigation involves skilled oral advocacy, the primary focus is on the briefs. Appellate briefs must distill the most important issues from often complex and lengthy trial proceedings, must present convincing legal arguments for every issue on appeal, and must give the appellate court a compelling reason to rule in your favor. Decades of experience allow us to craft compelling briefs, anticipating and effectively addressing all significant strategic, tactical, and substantive issues.
While the work of an appellate attorney often begins when a trial ends, Masters Law Group regularly partners with trial counsel before and during trial. We can help spot potential appellate issues and ensure that they are properly preserved for appellate review.
A Broad Base of Clients and Cases
Many, if not most, of our clients are referred to us by other lawyers, though some contact us directly. We typically handle all aspects of an appeal, though we also regularly provide appellate consultations.
We take on a broad range of civil cases, including contracts, covenants, employment discrimination, guardianships, custody and parenting plan issues, health care and intellectual property, product liability, real estate, trusts, and zoning, to name just a few. In addition to assisting other firms in appellate matters, we have represented many individuals facing an appeal, companies that have not been well served by our justice system, and even that little ol’ band from Texas, ZZ Top.
